Tech Talk with Laurie

What exactly is phishing? Why did that email end up in your spam folder? Is it safe to click that link? And why does your phone keep asking you to update something? If you have questions like these, join Laurie - Rosedale's resident techy - for a relaxed weekly conversation about the everyday technology we all use.

We'll start with about 30-45 minutes focused on a practical topic, with lots of opportunity for questions, discussion and peer support. Chances are, if you're wondering about something, someone else in the room is too. Topics will include staying safe online, recognizing suspicious emails and texts, passwords, smartphones, apps, social media and other everyday technology questions.

This is very basic tech talk - no jargon and no prior knowledge required. We also hope to occasionally welcome guest speakers who can help us explore particular topics.

Have a specific problem with your phone, tablet or laptop? Add your name to our sign-up sheet and bring your device to a future session for some one-on-one help with Laurie or one of our student volunteers. We may not be able to fix everything, but we'll do our best to help you figure out what's going on and point you in the right direction.

Meet Laurie

Laurie Lyle is the Executive Director of Rosedale United Church and The Rosedale Centre. She's not an IT professional - but technology has been a big part of her work throughout her career in the nonprofit sector, particularly helping organizations and staff teams adopt new systems and find practical ways to use technology to work better.

At Rosedale, Laurie has led the introduction of a number of new digital systems and spends plenty of time helping staff learn how to use them. She particularly enjoys making technology feel a little less intimidating - and helping people find the answer to the question, "Why is it doing that?"
