Part Time (24 hours per week)
Evening Shifts: Monday – Thursday 5 – 10 p.m./ Day shift: Sunday 9 -1 p.m., plus occasional events.
Hourly rate: $20.00
Overview: Rosedale United Church is seeking an Evening Church Custodian to provide cleaning and moderate maintenance service for the whole church and grounds, while maintaining the church as a welcoming, clean, and safe environment for parishioners, employees, and residents. The evening custodian will work closely with the Lead Church Sexton, Property Chair, and team members to ensure daily custodial upkeep and maintenance of the church building and property.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Cleaning
Clean, dust and vacuum the premises
Mop floors of the sanctuary, church halls, kitchens, stairs, and washrooms, etc.
Clean washroom counters, sanitize toilets and sinks, restock supplies
Empty and remove garbage and recycling receptacles
Water indoor plants and occasionally clean windows if required
Clean dishes, load dishwasher and clear food debris
Provide sanitization of heavily used areas on a regular basis
Handling of light kitchen laundry
Maintenance & Repair
Perform light maintenance and minor repairs around the premises, i.e. painting, church equipment/tools and the replacement of electrical/building parts as needed
Shovel show, remove ice, salt walkways in the winter, grass cutting and light landscaping
Undertake occasional custodial tasks of lifting heavy items, moving tables and chairs, rearranging supplies, and furniture, etc. Monitoring & Event Preparation
Conduct walkabouts inside and outside of the church grounds to check for safety hazards, building security and locking up at night.
Provide supervision of church property and patrons, respond to emergency calls and maintenance requests if required
Report on any safety hazards and concerns that require attention
Assist the Sunday Service Steward or Minister with tasks if required
Occasionally make coffee and set out water for visitors, meeting attendees, weddings, and funerals
Provide custodial and host service for church and rental events, i.e. weddings, funerals, other
Set up and arrange church halls and meeting rooms for events, meetings, and classes
Act as a front door and seating host for special events.
High school diploma or equivalent
Proven experience as a custodian, janitor or equivalent
Knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing, and general repairs
Knowledge of tool use, industrial cleaning equipment and appliances
Kitchen or customer service experience an asset
Must be in good physical condition, as the position requires bending, reaching, and lifting over 40 lbs.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to adapt to situations, follow instruction and carry out tasks
Flexible and willing to work on holidays, and weekends when necessary
Demonstrates strong teamwork skills and can cooperate with clergy, staff, volunteers, congregation, renters, and external contractors
Punctual, courteous, dependable, patient, accommodating, compassionate, welcoming and kind
Fluent in English and writing skills
Knowledge of Health and Safety Laws and regulation an asset
Knowledge of First Responder training (First Aid, CPR, Defibrillator) an asset
A valid driver’s license and personal vehicle an asset, but not necessary
Must be willing to provide a criminal record check upon success of candidacy
