Classic Christmas, Carols and Candlelight
The four Sundays in the Season of Advent are traditionally the beginning of the church year, as we begin again to tell the sacred story of expectation, birth, life, death, and resurrection.
The seasonal colour for Advent candles is purple or blue (the colour of royalty and the coming King), with a pink candle on the third Sunday. One candle is lit each week and is a symbol of a gift Christ brings to us: Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love.
Advent traditions date from the 6th century, and provide a time for the community to not only prepare for the festivity of Christmas, but also to remember the longing and hopes for redemption that are a part of our living.
The Scriptures in Advent are often drawn from the writings of the prophets, in whom this longing and the promise of a messiah is most clearly seen. The story of John the Baptist, presented in the gospels as the one who "announces" the messiah is also prominent, along with Mary's story of anticipation and exultation.
