DESCRIPTION:Book Club is a welcoming\, low-pressure space for anyone who lo
ves a good story and friendly conversation. We meet once a month on a Mond
ay to share our thoughts on a wide variety of engaging reads. This year\,
we’re exploring the works of many Canadian authors\, including fiction\,
  memoirs\, history\, and other thought-provoking literary non-fiction. \n\
nThere’s no expectation to attend every meeting - join when you can! And
if life gets in the way and you haven’t finished the book\, you’re st
ill more than welcome to come and take part in the discussion. Our meeting
s are relaxed and collaborative\, with everyone invited to share insights\
 , ask questions\, or simply listen. \n\nWhether you’re a lifelong reader
or just looking for a reason to read more\, the Rosedale Centre Book Club
is a great way to connect with others\, discover new authors\, and be par
t of a warm and welcoming community. \n\nIf you have an questions reach ou
t to Caroline Duncanson at cduncanson@sympatico.ca\nThis month's book is U
nreliable Boyfriend by Chrystia Freeland.\nA provocative and rare insider
account of how a new generation of Western plutocrats maneuver power from
behind closed doors—and how liberal democracy can fight back—from reno
 wned journalist\, activist\, adviser\, and policymaker\, Chrystia Freeland
.\n\nChrystia Freeland spent decades reporting how foreign dissidents and
oligarchs\, from Moscow to China and beyond\, exploit economic upheaval an
d hollow out the lives of ordinary people. As a political leader and fierc
e negotiator\, she brought these lessons into halls of power\, only to enc
ounter a new order of global elites and tyrannical regimes—this time in
the West itself.\n\nNow\, at a time when authoritarianism is resurging aro
und the world alongside rising tariffs\, economic anxiety\, and democratic
instability\, she shines a light on the current crisis of liberal democra
cy. With bold and unusual candor\, Freeland exposes how deals are really m
ade\, how coalitions fracture when governments fail to deliver for working
people\, and argues that trade\, security\, and democracy can no longer b
e separated. Instead\, democracies must build new alliances strong enough
to resist foreign autocrats and homegrown oligarchs.
