DESCRIPTION:Book Club is a welcoming\, low-pressure space for anyone who lo
ves a good story and friendly conversation. We meet once a month on a Mond
ay to share our thoughts on a wide variety of engaging reads. This year\,
we’re exploring the works of Canadian authors\, including fiction\, memo
 irs\, history\, and other thought-provoking literary non-fiction. \n\nTher
e’s no expectation to attend every meeting - join when you can! And if l
ife gets in the way and you haven’t finished the book\, you’re still m
ore than welcome to come and take part in the discussion. Our meetings are
relaxed and collaborative\, with everyone invited to share insights\, ask
  questions\, or simply listen. \n\nWhether you’re a lifelong reader or j
ust looking for a reason to read more\, the Rosedale Centre Book Club is a
great way to connect with others\, discover new authors\, and be part of
a warm and welcoming community. \n\nIf you have an questions reach out to
Caroline Duncanson at cduncanson@sympatico.ca \n\nThis month's book is The
Adversary by Michael Crummey:\n"In an isolated outport on Newfoundland's
northern coastline\, Abe Strapp is about to marry the daughter of a rival
merchant to cement his hold on the shore when the Widow Caines arrives to
throw the wedding and Abe's plans into chaos.\n\nThat ruthless act of sabo
tage is the opening salvo in a battle between the man and woman who own Mo
ckbeggar's largest mercantile firms\, each fighting for the scarce resourc
es of the north Atlantic fishery\, each seeking a measure of revenge on th
e person they despise most in the world. As their unshakeable animosity sp
irals further each year into vendettas and violence\, the community is inc
reasingly divided and even the innocents in Mockbeggar find themselves for
ced to take sides\, with devastating consequences.\n\nThrough merciless se
asons of uncertainty and want\, through predatory storms and pandemics and
marauding privateers\, it is the human heart that reveals itself to be th
e most formidable and unpredictable adversary for each person drawn\, inev
itably and helplessly\, into that endless feud.\n\nCompulsively readable a
nd uncompromising\, The Adversary is a masterful evocation of a lost time\
, and a shadowed mirror to our modern politics of grievance and retributio
 n."
